DMEH @ THE DEVON COUNTY SHOW

The Devon Music Education Hub welcomed hundreds of young people to the Babcock Education Bandstand stage at the Devon County Show where they wowed the audiences across the three days of the show.

We enjoyed school choirs, junior orchestras, soul bands, folk ensembles, percussion groups, rock bands - and we even enjoyed a full maypole dance from Newton Poppleford Primary School. The range and quality of performances we saw from  across Devon was truly a credit to the fantastic music education work going in our schools.

Saturday saw a range of performances from DMEH supported Devon youth ensembles - including the Devon Youth Wind Orchestra pictured above. And we were delighted to welcome some young contemporary musicians bringing their own bands, and some with their own compositions, to the stage - Wolven, 23 Nineteen and The JOM were all fantastic.  A special mention must go to Okehampton's Gravity Stops who were peforming their first- ever gig as a band and did a terrific job. See you in 2017!

CPD OPPORTUNITIES FROM DMEH

Music Education practitioners can apply to the Devon Music Education Hub to support their professional development needs

With funding being such an obstacle to accessing CPD, DMEH has made funding availble to support the needs of individuals, including a contrbution towards cover costs if needed.

Some practitioners have signed up to start the Certificate of Music Educators qulaification by distance learning, and Wren Music will soon be launching their own Devon-based CME programme.

If you are a school based practitioner and there is a regional or national course you woudl like to attend for which funding is an obstacle, please make an application using the forms below.

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY & SEN/D CPD DAY

DMEH ran a Music Technology and SEN/D training day with Phil Heeley of Inclusive Music and Mike Cook from CEDA for practitioners from across Devon. They introduced colleagues to a wide range of progammes, apps and specialist technology to enable wider access to high quality music education and there was wide reaching and useful discussion about the next steps we can take to help enable practitioners in this area. Watch this space - and please email Clair McColl if you'd like to have any suggestions.

HUBSOUNDS- SHOWCASE GIG WITH EXETER PHOENIX

Thursday 2nd June saw dozens of young rock and pop musicians from DMEH supported projects come together to share and celebrate their hard work in a showcase gig in partnerhsip with Exeter Phoenix.

The DMEH team were delighted to hear from one young musician, "HubSounds was great this year. I really enjoy performing at gigs and this year and last year's HubSounds was great. I am not a very confident person and performing in Exeter with my friends really boosts my confidence."

A huge thank you to the young musicians and music leaders from The Academy of Music and Sound Saturday Rock Club, Jamming Station, Soundlaunch, the North Devon Centre for Contemporary Music and the OCRA Rock & Pop project in Okehampton. Thanks also to the team at Exeter Phoenix and the many supporters who came along to enjoy the gig.

You can see a video our colleague Jason put together to mark the occasion by following this link.

Never before had we seen so many bassoons together in one room - 16 players! We received fantastic feedback about the event and we sincerely hope the experience will encourage these players to not only continue playing, but seek out other opportunities to enjoy playing in ensembles.

IS RURAL ISOLATION AN OBSTACLE TO YOUR SCHOOL ACCESSING INSTRUMENTAL TUTION?

DMEH is looking to identify schools who are struggling to offer the range of instrumental tution required to meet the needs of their students due their rural isolation.

The Hub has purchased some equipment to faciliate effective remote instrumental  tuition. We are now working to train and support some tuition providers to enable them to use new technology to offer their services in hard to reach areas of Devon.

We are taking a lead from a pilot project by by North Yorkshire Music Action Zone, To find out more about what they learned and what it could mean for your school, please follow this link.

If you think your school could benefit and would like to work with us on the project in the coming academic year, please get in touch with Clair McColl. We are finalising plans for consultation and training day on Monday 25th July in Willand. Please get in touch if you'd like to come along to hear more about the project.

NORTH DEVON SUMMERTIME CELEBRATION WITH NORTH DEVON THEATRES

May 16th & 17th saw schools from across Northern Devon come together for a Cultural and Community Canrival as part of the Northen Devon Summertime Celebration in partnership with North Devon Theatres.

School groups had prepared performance pieces to showcase their instrumentall, vocal and dance work inspried by different countries of the world. They were joined by a house band led by Paul Painter featuring secondary school musicians from the area and members of the Ilfracombe Rocks DMEH supported rock and pop project.

DMS Music Lead for North Devon, Debbie Kent, led the finale sing-a-long each evening with the massed ensmeble singing pieces inspired by the 2016 Brazil Olympics - amongst them, Mas Que Nada and the athemic World in Union.

Feedback from schools was universally positive, including:

"Thank you again for such a wonderful event - we have had so much positive parent feedback about the whole evening and how wonderful it was that our children could share in such inspirational performances."

"This was an exciting experience for our pupils most of whom had never performed at the theatre before.  It was particularly positive working alongside other schools and seeing them perform."

"I feel that the opportunity to perform on a professional stage was an amazing opportunity for the pupils."

As DMEH makes plans for a 2017 event, we hope to offer schools in other areas of Devon the opportunity to come together and work collaboratively in professional venues. Please get in touch with your Music Lead if you'd like your school to get involved.
