English folk music has been the ideal genre for Wren Music's work in secure schools and schools for young people with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties (SEBD). Two of Wren's music team - Dave and Nick - explain the three key reasons for this success.
AYM helps exceptional young people who need financial and other forms of support to progress their musical talent and to develop their skills to their full potential. Follow this link for information on how young people can apply for up to £2,000 in support of their music making.
Devon Music Education Hub was delighted to have worked with colleagues in Plymouth, Torbay and Cornwall hubs to facilitate the SW Peninsula Music Education Conference. Music education practitioners came together to network, share, discuss assessment & new projects as well as learn new musical skills. The day was rounded off with a singing workshop from top vocal leader Lin Marsh which left delegates truly uplifted after a busy and rewarding day. See you next year!

DMEH has been supporting secondary schools and learning communities with advice and funding to start their own area transition choirs. based at the secondary school, these choirs aim to not ony to raise standards in singing for boys and girls, but also to facilitate schools to work together in clusters and provide a safe learning environment for primary children to visit their feeder Secondary school, meet teachers and older peers.
Sarah Owen from Wren Music is leading the Transition Choir in Sidmouth. She says:  It's been fantastic to create this new collaboration with Sidmouth College as we have been able to reach more young people through working together.  As an extremely busy Head of Music, Ollie Hickman just isn't able to lead this new group and this is where Wren has been able to step in.  Together, Oliie and I made joint visits to all the Primary schools in the Learning Community to give the children a flavour of the sessions and have been delighted to welcome in around 35 young singers from all of the four primaries in the Learning Community as well as students from Sidmouth College.  We've had three rehearsals so far and they make an incredible sound - we are just planning our very first gig!"
Please contact the Music Lead for your area if you'd like to kick start a Transition Choir project in your community.
Read on for an update from the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestras, whose musicians spent a day in the recording studio to record five songs for Carer's Pathways, thanks to a project supported by Devon County Council,  DMEH and the John Lewis Partnership Trust.
